In efforts to reduce the weight on a Micro Helicopter we are sometimes forced to think outside the box. For example, a common weight reduction technique is to remove the casing of a Gyro or a receiver. One less common technique is the one posted here. In this case we remove the back case of the HS-50 or HS-55 Hitec servos. For the HS-55 we will remove the 4 screws and then pull off the back case. On the HS-50s we use small pliers and gently press out the back case cover.
Next we need to apply a small drop of thick CA against the Servos internal motor. This will insure the motor will remain in place under pressure. Be careful not to apply too much and make sure that no CA enters the motor or gears or you will destroy the servo.
Let the CA dry and make sure that the motor can not rock and is solid against the front case cover. Continue by removing the servo mounting arms, simply cut off the arms using pliers and sand off the remaining material.
This technique can reduce as much as 7 grams; when used in a collective pitch Hornet setup with (4) HS-55 Hitec servos. This will directly translate into longer flight time and room to install more mods.
